How to Set Up a Google Chrome Personalized Homepage

This wikiHow teaches you how to set up your Google Chrome homepage by editing your browser's settings, after which point you can change the background and layout of the homepage by using themes and extensions. Keep in mind that you cannot personalize your Chrome homepage from within the Google Chrome mobile app.

Creating the Home Page

  1. This icon is in the top-right corner of the Chrome window. Clicking it prompts a drop-down menu.
  2. You'll find this option in the drop-down menu. Doing so opens the Settings page.
  3. Signing into Chrome allows you to save any subsequent settings to your Google Account, meaning that you'll be able to access your personalized homepage on any computer on which you're signed into Chrome. To do so:
    • Click SIGN INTO CHROME at the top of the Settings page.
    • Enter your email address and click NEXT
    • Enter your password and click NEXT
  4. It's near the top of the Settings page.
  5. It's below the "Show Home button" line of text. Doing so will set the "New Tab" page as your homepage; this is crucial, as the New Tab page is the easiest page to customize.
  6. You'll find this heading near the middle of the Settings page.
  7. It's at the top of the "Search engine" section. Doing so will prompt a drop-down menu.
  8. In the resulting drop-down menu, click the search engine (e.g., Google) that you want to use. You can choose from one of the following:
    • Google
    • Bing
    • Ask
    • AOL
  9. It's at the bottom of the Settings page.
  10. Doing so will allow you to open your personalized homepage when you open Google Chrome.

Adding a Background

  1. Go to https://chrome.google.com/webstore/ in your Chrome browser. The Chrome Web Store is the location from which you can install free backgrounds, themes, and other customizations for your homepage.
    • You can also scroll back up to the "Appearance" section and click Themes to open the Web Store.
  2. It's in the upper-left side of the Chrome Web Store, found just below the Search bar. Doing so will display a list of backgrounds and browser visual themes for Chrome.
    • Skip this step if you clicked the Settings page's Themes button to open the Chrome Web Store.
  3. Scroll through the backgrounds and visual themes until you find one that you like.
    • Remember, your selected theme will be the background for your homepage as well as some Google pages.
  4. Click a theme that you want to use for your homepage. Doing so will open the theme's page.
  5. This blue button is in the upper-right corner of the theme's page.
  6. Once the theme's installation is complete, your browser will refresh and display the changes.

Adding a New Layout

  1. Click the small x in the upper-right corner of the theme's window to close it. Now that you've changed your homepage's background, you can add features and widgets to it.
    • If you closed the Chrome Web Store, re-open it before proceeding.
  2. It's in the upper-left side of the Chrome Web Store page.
  3. Doing so will search the Chrome Web Store for New Tab layouts that differ from Google Chrome's standard features.
    • For example, a New Tab layout might include a weather widget or an updated search interface.
  4. It's in the upper-left side of the page. This will ensure that you only see results for extensions.
  5. Scroll through the New Tab layouts until you find one that you like.
    • INFINITY NEW TAB and Speed Dial are two examples of New Tab extensions which will completely redesign your homepage.
    • Keep in mind that some New Tab layouts will negate your New Tab background image.
  6. Click a New Tab layout that you like to view information and screenshots for the layout.
  7. It's a blue button in the upper-right corner of the page.
  8. Doing so will add the extension to your Google Chrome browser.
    • Your browser may restart after the extension is added.
  9. If the New Tab layout extension makes significant changes to the New Tab page, you may have to accept the changes by clicking Keep changes in a pop-up window.

Tips

  • You can remove the "recently viewed" thumbnails that show up below your search bar on the New Tab page by clicking the top right corner of each one. Keep in mind that they will refill after a browsing session.
  • You can change your profile image by clicking your current profile image in the top right corner of the New Tab page and then clicking Change on the enlarged image.
